So how fast can a cannonball fly?

Mythbusters' Cannonball Flightpath

Apparently to test that myth out, they intended to fire a cannonball into several barrels of water and then a cinder block to slow it down and then finally landing into a hill as part of their safety measures but it missed and the path of destruction the cannonball took as shown above.

The cannonball accident was met with many negative and unhappy response from the nearby neighborhood. Residents complained that this accident was supposedly foreseeable and that it was only a matter of time before something happens. Some think that perhaps they should move their dangerous experiments elsewhere where it is less populated. The rest of the report can be seen here.

Personally it would be fun to have so much exciting things happening in my neighborhood but perhaps the resident's fears are not truly unfounded when you have explosions and gunfire going off nearby. Could be fun and interesting at first but perhaps an annoyance and disturbance over time?

  1. I'm sure this was an accident. From what I've seen theses guys are usually very cautious in their experiments. Lucky no one got hurt.

    1. Yea..but the residents living nearby thinks that they should not even be doing such dangerous experiments, whether or not they are being cautious. Quite sad such a thing had to happen.

  2. Did the experiment really go that wrong? LOL. Leaving a trail of destruction, Google Maps detail makes it even more hilarious.

    1. Yea, really surprising that the cannonball can fly that far and still have enough energy to smash through so many things

    1. There was the accident that happened in Esparto, California where they shattered windows with 500 pounds of explosive, i guess you can't guard against everything.

    1. Well, residents complained that their dogs would go crazy whenever they fired guns and set off bombs, some even moved out or expressed regret at buying properties in this area when mythbusters started their experiments. Maybe they preferred boring and calm compared to exciting.

  5. I love mythbusters!!! They have an amazing sense of humour and I love how smart they are. Haha. In my opinion, I guess some residents got angry because of the damages, but those who understand and have an open mind, I am sure they wouldn't mind! But for safety measure, maybe they should do it somewhere further. Interesting post Joel :)

    1. With such experiments, they will have to go extremely far to not disturb anybody, but that would be too impractical. Can't please everyone it seems.

  6. I always liked watching mythbusters on TV but they usually don't show the accidents that happen in their experiment. This is interesting. Looking forward to your next post.

    1. Yea, these accidents are bad enough that it happened, they will surely not air them on tv.

  7. I don't watch MythBusters personally but there are some of my friends who watch and I always get exaggerated descriptions by them. I see why now when I watched the videos. It is enjoyable watching them because in Singapore, we would not have such freedom to do such things. Overall, I like the videos posted and your personal opinion on it (:
